Live practice or a self-paced conversation course?

Separate instruction from participation

Reading an example, watching a lesson, speaking aloud alone, and talking with someone else are different activities. Choose the activity you need to practice. If you want to pause and revise a story, self-paced material may be a useful starting format. If your task is responding in the moment, inspect a setting where actual conversation occurs.

Define what useful feedback would cover

Feedback could address clarity, pacing, whether a question invites a response, or how the listener understood your point. Find out who responds, whether feedback is individual, and whether it is part of the offer you would use. A discussion board or peer group does not automatically provide coaching, and a recording does not interpret itself.

Check the participation expectations

For a live setting, inspect time-zone fit, turn-taking, camera expectations, registration, and whether observing a first session is possible. For a course, inspect access duration, exercises, prerequisites, and whether another person is needed. Group membership or facilitated peer participation may involve different goals from a skills class.

Make the practice task observable

“Become more confident” is hard to review after a session. “Ask one follow-up that refers to what the person just said” gives you something specific to notice. Use the practice planner to choose an action, a setting where conversation is welcome, and a review question. Outcomes depend on the context and the other person as well as your preparation.

Choose a feedback loop
