Name the missing piece
A tracker records what happened. A reminder prompts an action. A timer marks a planned work or break interval. Accountability or coworking involves another person or an agreed check-in. These functions can be combined, but they answer different questions. Choose the function you actually want.
Define the action and the record
Use a specific action and record what happened without turning an unknown into a missed entry. If you need reminders, choose when and how you want to be prompted. If you need a timer, choose the task before the interval. The tool’s design does not decide how important the action should be.
Inspect participation where another person is involved
Check what a shared arrangement expects, what information is visible, and how either person pauses or cancels. Check for explicit evidence of live shared participation before treating an option as virtual coworking. Game features, public progress, and timers should not be presented as equivalent to live coworking or individual coaching.
Choose a review question you can act on
Ask whether the tool helped you remember, record, plan, or return to the task. A missed entry may mean the action did not happen or that the record was not updated. Keep those possibilities separate. A habit record is information for adjusting a routine, not a judgment about character or a clinical assessment.
Choose the support function
| Function | Question it answers | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Tracking | What did I record as happening? | Entry method, limits, unknown states, and export |
| Reminder | When do I want a prompt? | Notification controls and supported devices |
| Timer | What interval did I plan for this task? | Settings, pauses, and interruptions |
| Shared support | What have we agreed to do together? | Actual participation, visibility, and pause rules |

An action rather than an aspiration
Original hypothetical example
Instead of tracking “be productive,” Pat records “open the current draft and write the next sentence.” The record can show done, not done, or unknown. It does not explain all of the reasons behind an entry.
