Describe the smallest useful record
Choose one action, its planned occasions, and the states you want to record. A simple template may be sufficient if you only need a visible record. An app may add reminders, charts, or a structured entry process. Decide which functions matter before comparing feature counts.
Read the limits of the intended offer
Check how many habits, entries, reminders, or other records are included in the offer you would use. Continuing unpaid access and a temporary trial are different arrangements. A current access field does not establish every limit; if the catalog has not verified the exact limit, inspect the provider rather than assuming unlimited use.
Compare paper and digital maintenance
Paper requires keeping the sheet accessible and updating it. A spreadsheet requires a file and a consistent entry method. An app requires devices, settings, and an understanding of export or access changes. All formats can have blank entries; decide whether blank means unknown instead of automatically treating it as not done.
Review the record with context
Inspect what the record actually contains, then add a note if the plan or setting changed. A chart may summarize entries without explaining them. Adjust the action or recording process when appropriate instead of making a stronger commitment merely to improve a streak.
Compare recording formats
| Format | What you maintain | Question to check |
|---|---|---|
| Printable sheet | Visible action, dates, and entries | Where will it stay and what does a blank mean? |
| Spreadsheet | File, rows, and formulas or summaries | Can I inspect and keep the record? |
| Application | Entries, settings, and account or device access | Which limits and features belong to my offer? |

Blank is not the same as not done
Original hypothetical example
An invented weekly sheet has four done entries, two not-done entries, and one unknown. It contains seven planned occasions and six known records. The unknown entry should not silently become a seventh known failure; the note can explain that the sheet was not updated.
