Budget sharing: invitations, permissions, and an exit checklist

Check how another person joins, what they see, and what remains when access ends.

Provider facts have their own verification dates. How we check sources and choose resources.

Map the invitation and the view

Find out whether each person has a separate account and which information appears after an invitation is accepted. Inspect balances, transactions, categories, notes, and earlier history separately where the documentation allows. An invitation to a household is not evidence that some accounts can stay hidden.

Inspect authority as well as visibility

Being able to see a budget is different from being able to change it, invite someone else, remove a participant, or manage billing. Write down those actions and the documented authority for each. Check connected accounts separately: the person who adds a feed may have a different role from someone who sees imported entries.

Test the record you would keep

Look for supported export formats and which records they include. A download may omit notes, category history, or attachments. If export is important, inspect the documentation and try it with a small non-sensitive example before depending on it for the only copy of your planning records.

Treat leaving as several separate tasks

Removing a participant, disconnecting a bank feed, canceling the subscription, deleting an account, and preserving an agreed record can be different operations. Check what each operation changes for the other person. Avoid making irreversible changes before both people understand the shared record they need to retain.

Questions for the provider documentation

  • Does the invitation expose earlier transactions or only future entries?
  • Can a participant edit, invite, remove, or manage payment?
  • What happens to a connected account when its owner leaves?
  • Which data can be exported, and by whom?
  • Does cancellation stop billing without deleting the account?
  • What does deletion remove from the other participant’s view?

An exit note with explicit unknowns

Original hypothetical example

“I own the subscription; we both can view the household. We have verified transaction export, but have not verified whether notes are included. Before unlinking, we will inspect the export and agree on the record to keep.” The note records an unknown instead of turning it into a promised capability.
